AI Translation Summary

Safetynovela turns the inflight safety briefing into a full-blown Filipino telenovela, complete with real soap opera stars, a film festival trailer, and a live sequel. By speaking the country's best-loved storytelling language, Philippine Airlines lifted safety recall from 49% to 93%.

Cultural Context

In the Philippines, the telenovela is a cultural institution—melodramatic serialized dramas that dominate primetime TV and unite generations of viewers. Safetynovela taps directly into that shared love of soap-opera storytelling to make otherwise-ignored safety instructions unmissable.

Entry Information

Summary

People only remember 49% of inflight safety instructions. But in the Philippines, one format never fails to hold attention: the telenovela. Safetynovela is the first safety video starring real telenovela actors, with a melodramatic storyline designed to keep passengers watching from beginning to end. We expanded it into a full entertainment experience: a film festival trailer, streaming platform presence, extra chapters, and even a live sequel. Although other ‘entertaining’ safety videos exist, this storytelling proved to be uniquely effective. It was praised by the PH President as “so creative, so engaging, and so Filipino,” with 33M+ views across 100 countries & 17% increase in online bookings. Best of all, research showed that passengers remember 93% of the safety instructions.

Strategy

In the Philippines, 86% of the population still watches TV, where 9/10 shows are telenovelas. A huge part of Filipino life, these melodramatic soap operas reflect our social realities, uniting Filipino audiences across generations. Decades of watching have conditioned Filipinos to follow and remember stories told through this format. To engage them with information-heavy content, we needed a medium they would genuinely connect with. Our emotional investment also goes beyond viewing. Filipino fans keep conversations alive through content and online communities. That's why we created a full entertainment experience, which inspired memes, reaction videos, analyses, & fan content. Filipinos' love for drama wasn't just the insight. It became the very platform for making them pay attention.

Execution

With acclaimed director Marius Talampas, we brought Safetynovela to life true to Filipino soap operas. We cast real telenovela actors and collaborated with Filipino designers and craftsmen to create period-accurate wardrobe and telenovela sets. The film was scored with original music, performed specifically as a tribute to the distinct sound and emotion of beloved Filipino love songs. It was set in Hacienda Rosalia, a popular filming location for telenovelas. Then we went further and created a full entertainment experience. We launched the trailer during the Metro Manila Film Festival and on iWant (telenovela streaming app). The film was supported by telenovela-style airport safety billboards, presence on IMDb and Letterboxd, extra chapters, and a live sequel by popular demand.

Results

The Safetynovela spread like a real telenovela, generating over 33M views across 100 countries and a 17% increase in online bookings. It drew praise from celebrities & global audiences alike—including Bretman Rock, Charlie Puth, and President of the Philippines himself who described it as “so creative, so engaging, and so Filipino.” It also sparked fan-generated content not typically seen in airline communications. People created memes, reaction videos, film analyses, & even TikTok fan edits, making Safetynovela a true Filipino pop culture moment. More importantly, safety instruction recall reached 93% vs. the 49% benchmark. Online comments confirmed real understanding of life-saving procedures, with viewers citing details like life vest locations, evacuation, and brace positions.
